The Technical Product Manager II will lead all elements of product portfolio management including P&L responsibilities, product positioning, pricing, promotion, distribution, product road and new product development, competitive analysis, and business and strategic planning. This position will also serve as the marketing champion for the company’s gated New Product Development (NPD) process.
Duties and responsibilities associated with this role include:
Product P&L responsibilities - ensures product portfolio provides market and financial performance to meet current and long term business objectives.
Strategy, Product Portfolio and Product Road - Develops product line strategies in support of business strategic plans; participates in development of business plans and long range strategic plans to help drive growth. Manages project portfolio for alignment with product line strategies, market positioning, and financial targets. Establishes and implements specific product strategies and tactics aimed at optimizing the performance of both new and existing products as well as increasing market share in assigned company product categories. Participates in development and implementation of pricing strategies, business forecast models, and distribution strategies.
New Product Development - Marketing member of product development team. Defines product features and specifications based on user and market needs as well as cost requirements. Coordinates market input on features, packaging and graphics. Evaluates new product opportunities, supported by market research, to identify consumer requirements and analyze competition to determine product positioning. Lead the ideation and selection processes for new development projects. Develops marketing documents based on the new product development process and effectively communicates with internal and external resources. Coordinates the flow of products through the new product development pipeline using gated process working closely with Sales, Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing, Finance, and Customer Support.
Cross-Functional Teamwork and Category Leadership - Forecasts annual product sales and profit plan by product/market segments in conjunction with the Sales team. Supports Sales with information and updates on product introductions, changes, competitive analysis, industry trends and issues; assist on sales calls. Creates product instruction copy, package copy, catalogs, point of purchase, etc. Provides marketing input on advertising and promotional programs. Leads industry pricing research and internal cost reduction teams to improve product line profitability. Develops recommendations and cost/benefit analyses for product features and modifications. Monitors competitive offerings, maintain knowledge of competitive features and incorporate appropriate and/or discriminate features in our offerings. Works closely with OEMS, representatives, distributors, dealers, trade associations, suppliers, and other industry experts to gather market drivers, trends, customer needs, and other important business intelligence. Coordinates product phase-outs with other functions. Exercises good judgment by operating within broadly defined guidelines consistent with obtaining product lines results and support of the day-to-day operations. Performs job duties in a manner that maintains compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.

Education and Experience - Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, or Engineering; MBA preferred. 2-4 years’ experience in product management, marketing management or related functional experience in corporate organization. Experience positioning and marketing consumer products; preference for experience with sporting goods, consumer durables, or law enforcement categories. Experience with major brand and big box distributors. Proven success growing revenues profitably as product/marketing champion and expert in product management and new product development. Experience with product development from concept through launch. Strong understanding of technical products with skills understanding technical features and translating complicated specifications into consumer-friendly benefits.
