KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – VICE PRESIDENT OF MANUFACTURING The VP of Manufacturing (“VPM”) will be responsible for all manufacturing operations for the company. Reporting directly to the CEO, he/she will provide strategic operations leadership and strong tactical management, focusing on productivity and performance improvement for the manufacturing aspects of the Company.
Focus will be on process management and improvement concerning: parts machining, materials purchasing, inventory, assembly, packaging, order management and shipping, along with strong vendor relationship management.
The VPM will execute on data analytics to drive tactical decision making, cycle time reduction, productivity, quality, safety, and lean process teachings across the operation. In response to the current and anticipated growth, the VPM will prepare Shadow for launching new handgun models, while optimizing the production of current models, eliminating backlog, and reducing waste.
Of note, production will encompass both internal and external manufacturing capabilities. He/she will ensure that people, culture, processes, and systems all support the national and global strategy and performance expectations.
In addition, the VPM will be responsible for: • Recruiting, training, developing, motivating, and monitoring the performance of all manufacturing staff; • Developing a system of gathering, managing, and distributing critical data and measurements throughout the Company; • Efficiently managing materials, inventory, and logistics to meet demanding customer requirements, from distributors, dealers, and mass market retailers, both physically and online; • Constantly challenging (and as result, improving) the existing operating methods, budget spending, labor efficiency, material efficiency, engineering effectiveness, customer service, order entry efficiency, and human utilization; • Collaborating with Shadow’s other functional leaders to ensure maximum synergy with respect to Sales, Finance, Marketing, and Product Development; • Championing safe work processes / systems / behaviors and creating culture of continuous improvement around health, safety, and the environment
MUST HAVES Within a culture developed by the CEO and his core C-level team, the unconditional goal for the business is the production and distribution of firearms that will perform at the highest levels, in any environment, every time they are fired. To succeed in this role, the VPM will need to: • Be able to operate at the 50,000 or 50 foot level of thinking, and move seamlessly between the two; • Have direct, prior experience programming and operating a CNC machine for the production of firearms, but most importantly hiring, firing, and developing a world class manufacturing team; • Embrace and promote a culture that knows how and cares about winning; • Be highly detail oriented with keen understanding of the expectations of very discerning firearms customers.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE The best-suited VPM candidates MUST HAVE: • Managed and operated a high output, firearms components manufacturing shop with 10+ CNC machines and at least 20+ employees, producing at least 10,000 units per month; (i.e. “you’ve done it before”) • Advanced through operations roles and become a successful plant and/or senior operational leader. Shadow is not looking for a Manager to come in and build a staff. This is a hands-on VPM role that will develop as the company continues its rapid growth curve; (i.e. “you came up thru the ranks and know / respect the line worker”) • Experience in strengthening the use of data in an organization; (i.e. “decisions are made based on facts, not gut”) • Experience ramping operations in a small, entrepreneurial minded company or division that had significant growth; (i.e. “no myopic Corporate mindsets!”) • The ability to create and innovate solutions and encourage the same thinking among team members; (i.e. “think outside the box”) • Managerial courage and strength to attack the status quo; (i.e. “no wilting violets”) • Commitment to explicitly laying out a clear road map of change and monitoring progress; (i.e. “plan your work and work your plan”) • Built organization-wide relationships, influenced others to move initiatives forward, and create company wide success; (i.e. “play nice with others”) • Not get mired in the details, while still knowing every one of them; (i.e. “see the forest AND the trees”) • Led professionals through influence and cooperation; (i.e. “got sh#t done”) • The proven ability to create internal production plans based on demand plan and available budget; (i.e. “you are driving the manufacturing engine, and everyone is counting on you to be accurate”) • Implemented inventory management best practices including just-in-time ordering, production leveling, and elimination of inventory waste; (i.e. “despite all of the resources at your disposal, you still maintain a frugal mindset”) • An honest and straightforward approach to business and people; (i.e. “play heads up ball”). • Excellent written and verbal communication; (i.e. “We need to understand what you are saying”) • Experience as a gun owner and user; (i.e. “be a gun nut like us”)
EDUCATION An Undergraduate degree is required and an advanced degree in relevant manufacturing related disciplines is preferred.
