Real Avid is a brand that markets innovative products to the firearms and shooting markets. Our focus is on turning good ideas into great products. We’ve assembled a team of talented people doing some amazing work – catapulting us to the innovation leader in our category. Our products are in most major sporting goods stores like Cabelas / Bass Pro Shops, Dicks – and also Amazon. We manufacture all of our hard goods in China and cleaning chemicals in the US.
What’s the job?
We’re recruiting for a Senior Industrial Designer to develop new products for the Real Avid brand. As a Senior Industrial Designer you will primarily be charged with executing the full ramp-up process based on project briefs. This includes presenting phase-gate updates to internal teams, possibly (no – probably) changing direction mid-stream and executing the final deliverables - so the usual stuff you’ve probably been doing. Projects can include developing blue sky concepts, CAD design & renderings using Solidworks, and preparing engineering release packages for our Asian factories. On occasion, the role may be called upon for other contributions that we don’t even know yet. Sound familiar?
The Senior Designer reports to the Vice President of Product Development. This role works closely with our other designers and cross functional product development team.
Who are you?
A Solidworks rock star. Fun. Organized. Superb at time management and capable of juggling multiple projects simultaneously. You thrive in a creative atmosphere where things move fast. Really fast. You aspire to concept and execute industry-leading design work at the speed of life. The spirit of the entrepreneur is strong in you - you take ownership of your projects and are driven by a need to leave things better than you found them.
What you need to know:
At least 10+ years of concept, design and execution experience.
A thorough understanding of materials and processes, especially injection molding, stamping and casting.
Prior experience with consumer products brands is strongly
You must, I repeat MUST have Solidworks experience designing injection molded plastic products. You understand draft angles, slides, gates and parting lines. You will know the difference between polypropylene and polycarbonate.
Traditional design experience (sketching / rendering / model making)
Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite (Windows platform), presentation tools, and standard office software packages
Business savvy. You won’t cry when you hear the target price point of a new product. To us it’s a challenge accepted!
You will hopefully have experience “fire-fighting” if there are quality challenges. Problems need to be solved quickly and efficiently. Maybe this has never happened to you, but I doubt it.
Experience with the manufacturing of multiple materials & processes is required: Injection molding, casting, machining, stamping. This position requires a broad range of experience – so we are not looking for a specialist.
This position will also deal with decoration techniques: laser etching, pad & silk screen printing, plating, and color matching & texture.
Some travel may be required to work with China factories (but not for a while…). Periodic after-hour calls may also be required because of the time difference.
Factory communications experience is strongly desired. This position will be managing quality projects with the manufacturing engineers at over 10 different factories. Our communication with factories is done visually using Powerpoint files. Lots of them. You will need to work closely with each factory to track and resolve quality issues – including making recommendations for changes to the product to reduce failures.
Must be comfortable handling firearms and firearm components.
This is not a remote position. It will require working at the office.
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design
Extra Cool If You:
Are an outdoor enthusiast in camping, shooting, hunting, etc. We have a few non-enthusiasts on the team, but they manage to blend in by wearing flannel shirts.
Have an interest in design research and collecting data to validate new concepts.
Spoke Mandarin (that would be a grand slam home run)
Salary is based on qualifications, experience and is competitive with market value for the position. If you’d like to share your salary history, that helps us get an idea of your goals and expectations, but no pressure.
We offer a full range of employee benefits, including health, dental, vision and life and LTD insurance, 401k with match, and paid vacation, holiday and sick time.
Local Twin Cities candidates are preferred, but we’ll look at everyone. Please send your resume and a link to your online portfolio or samples of work that show examples of your plastic product design capabilities. If your portfolio and credentials are absolutely, positively amazing, we will reach out to schedule a screening interview. Please note that only applicants that meet the requirements will be considered. One more time - did I mention you MUST have Solidworks experience designing plastic products? Dogs are welcome in the office – but we’ll need to interview them first.
Send resume and cover letter explaining why you might be a fit for this position.
