What’s the job?
We are seeking two Design Engineers who want to flex their creative muscles to design some innovative new products for firearms owners. As a Design Engineer, you will primarily be charged with executing the full ramp-up process based on project briefs and extensive brainstorming & research. This includes presenting phase-gate updates to the product development team, possibly (no – probably) changing direction mid-stream and executing the final deliverables - so the usual stuff you’ve probably been doing. Projects can include developing blue sky concepts, CAD design using Solidworks, and preparing engineering release packages for our Asian factories. On occasion, this position may be called upon for other contributions that we don’t even know about yet. Sound familiar?
The Design Engineers report to the Vice President of Product Development. These roles will work closely with our industrial designers and cross functional product development team in both Minnesota and China.
Who are you?
A Solidworks ninja. Fun. Organized. Superb at time management and capable of juggling multiple projects simultaneously. You thrive in a creative atmosphere where things move fast. Really fast. You aspire to conceptualize and execute industry-leading design work at the speed of life. The spirit of the entrepreneur is strong in you---you take ownership of your projects and are driven by a need to leave things better than you found them.
What you need to bring with you:
No less than 5 years of design engineering and execution experience. We’re currently considering qualified junior and senior design engineers (but not recent graduates).
This is NOT a CAD monkey position. You will lead the charge and determine the engineering fate of several new products every year. You will be the father / mother of invention.
Prior experience with consumer products brands is strongly preferred.
You must, I repeat MUST have Solidworks experience designing plastic You understand draft angles, slides, gates, knockout pins and parting lines. You will know the difference between polypropylene and polycarbonate. If you don’t have experience designing plastic products this is not the job for you.
Business savvy. You won’t cry when you hear the target price point of a new product. To us it’s a challenge accepted! You may be working with our Asian factories to ramp-up new products, so clear and concise communication skills are required. Must be highly organized to deal with the documentation and communication requirements of the position.
Bachelor’s degree in design engineering or a similar engineering discipline. This position WILL NOT be designing fixtures and automation equipment. You will be designing consumer products and must understand those demands (finish, color, fitment, snaps, joining methods, packaging etc.)
You will hopefully have experience “fire-fighting” if there are challenges during the ramp-up process (or afterwards). Maybe this has never happened to you, but I doubt it.
Must be able to manage a large number of projects simultaneously.
Experience with multiple materials & processes is absolutely required: Injection molding, casting, machining, stamping. This position requires a broad range of experience in engineering consumer products. We are not looking for a specialist in a single process.
This position will also deal with decoration techniques: laser etching, pad & silk screen printing, plating, and color matching & texture.
Some travel may be required to work with China factories (but not for a while…). Periodic after-hour calls may also be required because of the time difference.
Factory communications experience is strongly desired. This position will be managing projects on a long term basis, including ownership after production. Our communication with factories is done visually using Powerpoint files. Lots of them.
MUST be comfortable handling firearms and firearm components. Research may occur at gun ranges or firearm shops.
This is not a remote position. It will require working at the office.
Extra Cool If You:
Are an enthusiast in shooting and/or hunting. We have a few non-enthusiasts on the team, but they manage to blend in by wearing flannel shirts.
Spoke Mandarin (that would be a grand slam home run)
Salary is based on qualifications & experience and is competitive in the market for the position. If you would like to share your salary history, that would help us get an idea of your goals and expectations, but no pressure.
We offer a full range of employee benefits, including health, dental, vision and life and LTD insurance, 401k with match, and paid vacation, holiday and sick time.
We prefer local Twin Cities candidates, but highly qualified out-of-town candidates will also be considered. Please send your resume and a few samples of work. If your samples and credentials are absolutely, positively amazing, we will reach out to schedule an interview. Please note that only applicants that meet the requirements will be considered. Did I mention you MUST have Solidworks experience designing plastic products? Dogs are welcome at the office – but we will need to interview them first.
Send resume and cover letter explaining why you might be a fit for this position. No phone calls please.
