Smith & Wesson seeks a Firearms Compliance Manager to oversee the company’s firearms compliance program. The Firearms Compliance Manager will lead the day-to-day activities of the firearms compliance function and be responsible for providing direction to the business to assess firearms compliance risks and propose, develop and implement risk mitigation strategies. The successful candidate will report to the Chief Compliance Officer and be expected to operate independently and proactively in a fast-paced environment. This role may be recast as a “Director” level role depending on the candidate’s experience level and other factors.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Ensure our compliance with all applicable laws, including the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Gun Control Act of 1968, and the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, as well as state and local laws.
- Ensure our compliance with all applicable rules and regulations, including those promulgated by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (“ATF”), as well as state and local laws and regulations.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for interactions with the ATF and state firearms regulatory boards and agencies.
- Manage a team of firearms compliance professionals.
- Develop strategies, solutions and systems designed to identify and address risks.
- Develop, implement, administer and maintain compliance policies, procedures, processes and programs.
- Operate with a mindset of continuous improvement, including by actively identifying opportunities to simplify and enhance compliance program processes.
- Establish and maintain effective cross-functional relationships with leaders and teams to drive collaboration and ensure accountability related to compliance processes and programs.
Experience, Competencies and Education
- Must have extensive experience working with and managing acquisition and disposition books and National Firearms Act transfer forms, as well as the general requirements associated with federal firearms licensees
- Must have relevant experience in the firearms industry
- Other significant experience will be considered
- Knowledge of firearms regulations of various states (e.g., CA, MA, MD, etc.) is a plus
- Familiarity with SAP is a plus
- Familiarity with ITAR and EAR is preferred
- Experience leading others in a compliance capacity is preferred
- Must have excellent organization, written communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be a detail-oriented problem-solver who demonstrates great work ethic
- Must have excellent analytical skills
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and act in a critical position of trust
- Must have the ability to respond to urgent requests
Location
- This role will be based in the Knoxville, TN area. Smith & Wesson announced in September 2021 that it intends to relocate its headquarters from Springfield, MA to Maryville, TN in 2023. We expect that this role will be based in Maryville in 2022, although periodic travel to Springfield will be required.
- Relocation support will be offered to the right candidate.
Language and Computer Skills
- Must have strong command of the English language, in both verbal and written communications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint and PowerPoint is desired.
Training Requirements
- Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position.
- Participate in and follow all company initiatives.
Miscellaneous
- Normal office environment conditions apply to this role. Must be able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
- The use of personal protective equipment may be required when on a factory floor.
- All employees are required to apply ergonomic principles to all job tasks.
- Within our manufacturing facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures and industrial lighting.
